Visual homing in environments with anisotropic landmark distribution

چکیده
Gradient descent in image distances can lead a navigating agent to the goal location, but in environments with an anisotropic distribution of landmarks, gradient home vectors deviate from the true home direction. These deviations can be reduced by applying Newton’s method to matched-filter descent in image distances (MFDID). Based on several image databases we demonstrate that the home vectors produced by the Newton-based MFDID method are usually closer to the true home direction than those obtained from the original MFDID method. The greater accuracy of Newton-MFDID home vectors in the vicinity of the goal location would allow a navigating agent to approach the goal on straighter trajectories, improve the results of triangulation procedures, and enhance a robot’s ability to detect its arrival at a goal.

Robust visual homing with landmark angles
This paper presents a novel approach to visual homing for robot navigation on the ground plane, using only the angles of landmark points. We focus on a robust approach, leading to successful homing even in real, dynamic environments where significant numbers of landmark points are wrong or missing. Three homing algorithms are presented, two are shown to be provably convergent, and the other sho...
متن کاملFeature Optimization for Long-Range Visual Homing in Changing Environments
This paper introduces a feature optimization method for robot long-range feature-based visual homing in changing environments. To cope with the changing environmental appearance, the optimization procedure is introduced to distinguish the most relevant features for feature-based visual homing, including the spatial distribution, selection and updating. In the previous research on feature-based ...
متن کاملLocal Homing Navigation Based on the Moment Model for Landmark Distribution and Features
[-10]For local homing navigation, an agent is supposed to return home based on the surrounding environmental information. According to the snapshot model, the home snapshot and the current view are compared to determine the homing direction. In this paper, we propose a novel homing navigation method using the moment model. The suggested moment model also follows the snapshot theory to compare t...
متن کاملNavigation in Large-Scale Environments Using an Augmented Model of Visual Homing
Several models have been proposed for visual homing in insects. These work well in small-scale environments but performance usually degrades significantly when the scale of the environment is increased. We address this problem by extending one such algorithm, the average landmark vector (ALV) model, by using a novel approach to waypoint selection during the construction of multi-leg routes for ...
متن کاملFinding Home: Landmark Ambiguity in Human Navigation
Memories of places often include landmark cues, i.e., information provided by the spatial arrangement of distinct objects with respect to the target location. To study how humans combine landmark information for navigation, we conducted two experiments: To this end, participants were either provided with auditory landmarks while walking in a large sports hall or with visual landmarks while walk...
